probably slightly less than half the time, the third USB drive (H) does not appear in 'My Computer' and I cannot access it in the Guest OS. The problem I'm having is though the system usually boots with all the drives visible, sometimes. I do not know if this is related, but I thought I'd mention it in case it is. The Guest Additions disk is then E, and the three USB disks are F, G, and H. Therefore, in Windows XP's 'Computer Management' utility (right click 'My Computer' then click 'Manage') I set drive letters set under Storage / Disk Management using right click -> 'Change Drive Letters and Paths' so that the Primary Slaves 'Allowed' list is only 'D'.

Because of a specific program setup on the Primary Master, the Primary slave has to be the D drive in order for it to work. Oddly, by default the IDE Primary slave does not automatically become the D: drive on boot (I believe in an actual physical PC this will always be the D drive by default unless a setting is changed).
